If you’re feeling the mid-winter blahs, the volunteers at St. Columba’s have a remedy: their Valentine Tea featuring “music, tea and delights” on Saturday, Feb. 15 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Complete with pretty china cups, finger sandwiches, scones, flowers and music, this is the third year for the tea which has become a winter tradition. The event is chaired by Southport resident Connie Heroy, working with a team of more than 30 volunteers who donate their time and energy to create the perfect English tea.
“The tea takes a lot of time and energy to put together, but when we see all the smiling faces and people from our community enjoying themselves, it’s all worth it in the end,” Heroy said.
Because seating is limited, this year it is possible to reserve a table for either six or eight guests in advance, but the deadline for reservations is Feb. 13. Also for the first time, the tea team has expanded the drinks menu to include hot cocoa for children and men and women are encouraged to bring their children and grandchildren.
Although the event has been on the church calendar since last year, set up will start the afternoon before. On Saturday morning, the seven kitchen volunteers will start plating food at 10 a.m. and continue throughout the afternoon, bringing food to the tables and constantly refilling teapots. Margaret Perritt makes the lavender and black teas that are served.
Jane Homer, Goni Leigh and Angela Richards create the finger sandwiches and Jackie Pinard makes the scones. Vanda Yonge creates the flower arrangements for each table.
The tea is $8 for adults, $3 for children ages 6-13 and free for children younger than 6. For more information or to reserve a table, call Heroy at 350-5279.
